Set up a phone for your parents
A checklist for sons, daughters and grandchildren. Do it together, at their pace — and let them press the buttons.
1. Make it readable
- Install Big Font and choose a size togetherAsk them to read the sample out loud; pick the first size that's easy. Guide
- Make buttons bigger tooIncrease Display size (Samsung: Screen zoom) next to the font size setting.
- Turn on bold textThicker letters are easier to see in daylight.
- Set screen brightness and timeoutBrighter screen, and a longer time before it switches off (2–5 minutes).
2. Make calling family easy
- Add yourself to Call familyIn Big Font: Tools › Call family. Add a clear photo for each person.
- Show how video calls workCall family can start WhatsApp, Zalo, Telegram or Viber video calls with one tap.
- Turn the ringtone and ring volume upAnd turn on vibration, so they notice calls.
3. Daily life
- Set medicine timesTools › Medicine: morning, noon, evening, bedtime. Add a photo of the pills so there's no mix-up.
- Put the tools on the home screenAdd the Big Font widget and choose the tools they use most.
- Tidy the home screenKeep the 6–8 apps they really use on the first screen; move or remove the rest.
4. Safety
- Turn on caller ID and spam protectionUsually in the Phone app's settings, under “Caller ID and spam”.
- Set up emergency informationLook in SettingsSafety & emergency — add medical info and emergency contacts.
- Write down the screen lockA PIN they can remember, kept somewhere safe at home.
- Agree on one rule“I never install an app or change a setting because someone on the phone asks me to — I call you first.”
5. Before you leave
- Let them try everything onceCall you, set a reminder, change the text size and press Undo.
- Leave a notePrint this page and write your number at the top.
Change one thing at a time and explain why. A phone that suddenly looks different can be more confusing than a phone with small text.
